Weekend News

Sunday 2/25/07

Six inches of snow today. Here are a couple of pics before I started shoveling. Benjamin wanted to come outside and play but he's still got a little congestion so it was best for him that he remain inside. I did smash a snowball over my head that got some laughs from him when he was looking outside the window though.

Big win for the Terps today over 5th ranked North Carolina 89-87. D.J. Strawberry scored a career-high 27 points as the Terps rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half. The Terps, 22-7 and 8-6 in the ACC extend its winning streak to five games. This was Maryland's first win over North Carolina in six tries since January 2004. Props to Gary Williams for bringing this team back from a 2-5 ACC start.

The Screaming Eagles Annual Meeting was held yesterday at the Rosslyn Spectrum. D.C. United Head Coach Tom Soehn was the guest speaker in front of an extimated two hundred members. He talked about the team's 4-1 victory over Olympia in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup.

The return leg of this quarterfinal match up is this Thursday at RFK Stadium. As CONCACAF Champions, D.C. United would play in the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup in Japan This is a huge opportunity for D.C. United.

Soehn mentioned that MLS Cup 2007 is going to be played at RFK Stadium and he said confidently "We'll be playing in it", which brought cheers from the crowd. He also said that Assistant Coaches Mark Simpson and Chad Ashton will both coach the reserves in the MLS Reserve League and that these reserves will be primarily used during the U.S. Open Cup competition in the Summer.

The event was very successful and I'm pleased to be the SE Treasurer for another year. Visit the Screaming Eagles web site here.

Gary made those guys believe that the game wasn’t over with. I definitely thought the game was done. Mike Jones and D.J. Strawberry stepped up big time tonight along with others.

That win definitely cemented a tournament selection.
